Blazes were set from Riverdale to Havelock

The Craven County fire marshal and the sheriff’s office is looking for leads after a person or persons set several roadside fires along U.S. 70 in an area stretching from New Bern to Newport.

The first fires were set at several locations beside the westbound lanes between the Pembroke and U.S. 17 exits in New Bern on Thursday night. The next day fires were set in a number of other spots from near Riverdale to the Tucker Creek.

“We’re not even sure they’re all connected,” New Bern Fire Marshal Danny Hill said. “We’re pretty sure that the fires that happened on Friday afternoon are all connected, but we’re still trying to see if they’re connected to the fire we had in the city limits on Thursday night.”

He said the fires set Friday were between Riverdale and Havelock city limits. He said he is also familiar with a fire set along Hibbs Road near Newport, but is not aware whether it was related.

Capt. John Whitfield of the Craven County Sheriff’s Office said the culprit has not been found. In fact, “there’s not any idea as to who’s doing it. We haven’t had any calls or anything.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the New Bern Fire Department at 639-2197.
