Burroughs was watching the child of a friend who was working
A Havelock man has been charged with the murder of an infant he was babysitting.
James T. Burroughs Jr., 27, whose listed address is 519 Red Fox Court, faces an open count of murder. He was arrested on Wednesday.
According to Capt. John Whitfield of the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, Burroughs had just recently moved in with the woman who was the child’s mother, though he was not a boyfriend of hers.
“He had just moved there,” Whitfield said. “She gave him a place to live. It was a temporary set-up.”
Burroughs was watching the woman’s 2-month-old baby on Jan. 19 when she went to work. On that day, EMS responded to the home in response to a call about a child having trouble breathing.
The infant was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern then flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for further care. However, the infant died on Tuesday afternoon.
“It died from injuries sustained,” Whitfield said. “They’re injuries consistent with child abuse.”
Burroughs is being held in Craven County Jail under no bond. He is scheduled for a first appearance in District Court on Thursday.
