Events planned for New Year's Eve and Day

1. Oriental Dragon run

The Oriental Dragon Run New Year’s Eve celebration is scheduled along Hodges Street on the waterfront in Oriental.

Those attending are encouraged to dress for the evening in festive costumes and bring noise-makers.

The runs are scheduled at 8 p.m., which is usually populated by families with children, and the second run will be at 11:30 p.m. The festivities continue through the ringing in of the New Year and the traditional dropping of the Croaker, the town’s mascot fish. It is lowered from the mast of a sailboat at the Town Dock.

The dragons include the traditional dragon, which dates back decades, and the Chinese Dragon, which was imported from China a few years ago.

2. Totally Awesome New Year’s Eve

The Totally Awesome 90s New Year’s Eve is scheduled for Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Saturday in New Bern.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the party will continue until 1 a.m.

Ages 21 and older are eligible. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

It will include the best 1990s music with DJ J.B. Fresh, live music with the Joe Baes Project, 1990s games, a full bar with signature-themed drinks, free champagne toast, giveaways, throwback photo booth and more.

3. Bonfire at the Beach

A Bonfire at the Beach has been scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the circle in Atlantic Beach.

The event is free and is designed to be a kickoff to New Year’s celebrations.

4. Cannon Blast

Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach has scheduled at New Year’s Eve Cannon Blast from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

The event will also feature live music from Gumbo Lily. The cannons are scheduled to fire at 7 p.m. to coincide with midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

Those attending can bring chairs, blankets and a picnic meal.

5. Penguin Plunge

The annual New Year’s Day Penguin Plunge fundraiser is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the circle in Atlantic Beach.

Minimum donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under is requested. Long-sleeved T-shirts are $20, and hooded sweatshirts are $35.
