Office now at M.L. King Boulevard in New Bern
A large U.S. flag stands by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard proudly proclaiming the new location of Craven County Veterans Services Office.
Jeff Futrell, Veterans Services director, sat in his new office pleased that the Veterans Services Office now has more than double the space compared to the office that was located on Neuse Boulevard.
“It’s a bigger location, a bigger office so we can hire more staff to serve the number of veterans that are here in Craven County,” Futrell said.
Futrell is currently the only Veterans Services officer, along with two administrative assistants, at the office located at 2402 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in New Bern. He plans to hire another service officer to help handle the needs of 20,000 veterans his office serves in Craven County, he said.
“We help them with everything from service benefit compensation, pension programs, health care, education, housing, personal services — anything and everything veterans may be looking for through their veteran benefits,” Futrell said.
Those benefits could be federal, state or local, and the Craven County Veterans Services Office assists eligible veterans and their dependents from World War II to current wars, he said.
“I love the new location,” Futrell said. “It’s right here on the main road where everybody can stop by and see us. There’s a lot more space, a lot more room. This is just going to be a good central hub for all veteran services for Craven County.”
The office has a spacious conference room, a large reception area and waiting area, an extra office for a new Veteran Services officer, a room for files, storage space, a break room and public restrooms.
“We’re open for business,” he said. “Come by and see us. I would like for all veterans to at least come in and sit down and talk even if they think they are not eligible for benefits. Let’s talk as see what you may be eligible for. Might be something you would be surprised about.”
A formal open house and ribbon cutting for the Craven County Veterans Services Office is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 19.
