Tree lighting planned in New Bern

1. YMCA Turkey Trot

The Twin River YMCA Turkey Trot is scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday in Taberna off U.S. 70 between Havelock and New Bern.

It includes timed and untimed events and features a 5K run and walk, stroller participation, and Kids Dash and a Dog Jog.

2. Light Up the Season

The holiday season begins on Friday with the annual Light Up the Season event in New Bern along the 200 block of Middle Street and in Bear Plaza.

It is part of the Beary Merry Christmas celebration produced by the Downtown Council of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce

The street will be closed and later in the afternoon, it is capped with the official arrival of Santa.

The event is from 1 to 9 p.m. and includes the opening of the Santa House. The seasonal block party will also include holiday music, dancing and crafts for the children.

SNOW in Bear Plaza, which will be a weekly weekend happening, gets going from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event is free to the public.

3. Tree lighting

The New Bern Community Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled at 5 p.m. Saturday at the traffic circle at East Front and Broad streets.

The evening will include music and the lighting of the 30-foot artificial tree.

The event is part of the Beary Merry Christmas celebration produced by the Downtown Council of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce.

Santa House hours at Bear Plaza on Saturday are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m., and SNOW in Bear Plaza is from 6 to 8 p.m.

4. Tryon Palace Festive Holiday

Tryon Palace hosts its Festive Holiday Kick-Off Weekend Friday through Sunday in New Bern.

The weekend marks the start of holiday tours through the governor’s palace and historic homes. It is included in the One Day Palace pass.

Mrs. Claus will be at the North Carolina History Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday to read Christmas stories.

Also on Saturday, Down East Dulcimers will set the holiday spirit by performing from 10 a.m. to noon inside Mattocks Hall at the North Carolina History Center, 529 Pollock St.

At both noon and 3 p.m., there will be showings of “The Polar Express” in Cullman Performance Hall. After each showing, Santa and the Conductor from “The Polar Express” will hand out bells to the children in attendance.

Tickets are $3 for children ages 12 and under, and $6 for adults. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended.

5. Santa arrives in Beaufort

Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive at the Beaufort Waterfront at 1 p.m. on Friday.

He’ll be arriving by boat and then set up at his workshop until 5 p.m. to hear Christmas wishes from boys and girls.
