Restaurant plans expansion

Big Apple Pizza is moving, but not very far.

According to general manager Chantale Stamp, the eatery will triple in size when it moves to new quarters directly adjacent to its present location at 1415 East Main St. in the Food Lion shopping Center on Havelock’s east end.

The business, which has been serving New York-style pizza for nearly 24 years out of a 1,600 square-foot space, is moving into a 4,500 square-foot section of the old Family Dollar space in the shopping center.

Currently, the business seats about 27 or 28 people, but the new expanded restaurant will have capacity for more than 80.

It’s tripling the size of the restaurant and tripling the number of seats, she said.

“We’re bringing out the kitchen a little bit, making it a little bit bigger,” said Stamp. “That way we can get orders out faster and be able to expedite things a little quicker.”

One additional convection oven will be added to the kitchen for preparation of sub sandwiches, hot dinners and bread.

According to Stamp, the business may or may not be hiring additional drivers and people to take orders.

“We’re expecting to be a lot busier, but our current crew is awesome though and we might not have to,” said Stamp.

Menu items will stay the same. The ingredients won’t change, but Big Apple plans to add additional appetizers and sandwiches.

“The big thing is that it is still going to be the same, great Big Apple Pizza that everyone knows and loves,” Stamp said. “It’s just going to be more space for everyone to further enjoy it.”

The new space is currently under construction. A large section of brick has been knocked out to make way for windows. According to Stamp, wallpaper will soon be put up.

“It’s still New York style pizza. Everything is still the same,” said Stamp. “We’re changing up a little bit of the décor but we’re still keeping everyone’s favorite pictures and there is some new stuff going up.”

Stamp said the business is planning on opening sometime in January.
