Folk arts concert also part of weekend events

1. Alive at Five concert

The final Alive at Five concert is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jaycee Park, 807 Shepard St., along the Morehead City Waterfront.

The free concert will feature Jim Quick and the Coastline Band playing a variety of beach and rhythm and blues music.

The Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association is putting on the concert.

2. Crystal Coast Con

The Crystal Coast Con, a science-fiction and gaming event, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Mac Daddy’s in Cape Carteret.

The event will feature door prizes, costume contests, celebrity guests and vendors.

3. Folk Arts concert

The Down East Folk Arts Society will present Victor & Penny on Friday at the Trent River Coffee Company, 208 Craven St., New Bern, and Saturday at Joslyn Hall at Carteret Community College in Morehead City.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music is an hour later.

Tickets are $16, with active-duty military and society members admitted for $13. Students tickets are $10.

Victor & Penny play original music along with prohibition-era jazz.

4. Chit Nasty Band concert

Raleigh’s Chit Nasty Band is scheduled to perform at 9 p.m. Friday at The City Laundry, 901 Pollock St., New Bern.

Admission is $7 at the door.

The band is touted as high energy and funk, with a mix of original music and fan favorites.

New Bern’s Bearfoot Monty will be opening the evening.

5. Benefit concert

The New Bern Firemen’s Museum has scheduled a benefit concert featuring barbershop and bluegrass music along with barbecue from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the New Bern Farmers Market, 421 S. Front St.

The show will feature members from the Southern Gentlemen Barbershop Chorus, the Harbor Sounds Bluegrass Band from Pamlico County and comedian/songster David Pfeffercorn. The event will be emceed by Dann Miller, the morning host of 97.9 FM “The Bear.”

The event also will have a silent auction and raffle.
