Days will be optional work days for staff

Citing safety of students and staff, Craven County Schools announced Tuesday that schools would be closed for the rest of the week for students.

“Safety for our students and staff are of the utmost importance,” according to a statement from the school system.

Hurricane Matthew swept through the area over the weekend, and a number of schools in Craven County remained without power Monday and Tuesday, when classes were supposed to resume after the Columbus Day holiday.

However, flooding is occurring in western portions of Craven County and is expected to get worse in some areas through the rest of the week.

“Our thoughts continue to be with those impacted by Hurricane Matthew,” according to the statement.

Wednesday through Friday will be optional work days for staff.
