A water main broke in Havelock this morning splitting pavement and flooding ditches.

The break happened at before 9 a.m. at the corner of Nunn Street and Smith Circle.

Havelock Police went to the scene and called the Havelock Public Services Department.

Havelock officials are assessing the damage and planning a course of action.

The city has issued notices to about 80 or 90 customers saying that water service had been interrupted due to an emergency outage.

The notice said that it make take up until 8 p.m. to complete the repair.

Water customers in the affected areas are asked to take precautions after the water service has been restored.

They are asked to flush water through the home or business by running water for two minutes to ensure that the pipe has fresh water.

Also, while waiting for tests results to come back from the lab, the city recommends boiling all water used for human consumption  for two minutes. This  would include drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice and washing hands.

Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease causing organisms , the notice advises.
