The second annual mattress sale for the Marching Wildcats is today.

From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday you can browse, sit and lie down to try out a mattress and help the Marching Wildcats in the process. All mattresses and box springs are new and carry a factory warranty. The Commons Area of South Davidson has been transformed into a mattress showroom.

Easter Egg-stravaganza set for April 8

The Town of Denton Parks & Recreation, along with area churches, will host the 2017 Easter Egg-stravaganza in Harrison Park. This year the Easter Egg-stravaganza is scheduled for noon–2 p.m. April 8. Activities will include egg drop, egg hunt for the little ones, egg decorating and more. The Easter bunny will be there for pictures.

The egg drop is for children 5 and up. The egg drop will begin promptly at noon. Each participating child will receive a goody bag. For children 4 and under there is a designated area in the playground area for the hunt. Sponsors include Denton Wesleyan, Central UMC, Siloam UMC, Clear Springs UMC, Pentecostals of Denton. Denton Elementary will host “Arty Party”

Denton Elementary, in collaboration with the Denton Public Library, will host from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday an “Arty Party.” Both entities are working together to bring various artist whose art forms and crafts come from several different cultures for students and parents to experience.

Students and their families will have the flexibility to visit as many artists as they wish, and dinner will be served for families.

Donate blood in memory of Brooke Pierce

The Brooke Pierce Memorial Blood Drive is scheduled for from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Central United Methodist Church, located at 276 W. First St., Denton. Hydrate with extra water and juice plus iron rich foods one week prior to donation.

This special memorial is sponsored by the Denton Ladies Civitans. Sadly, Brooke’s life was cut short when she died in a car accident while on her way to a local blood drive, in 2007, but her family and friends have carried on her legacy by holding a memorial blood drive each year in her honor.

Collegiates to perform 

The Collegiates will bring their musical sounds to Larry Furr’s Southern Theater & Event Center at 4 p.m. April 9. The cost is by donation and all funds will go to Father’s Store House, a ministry that provides food to the poor.

Playground equipment installed at park

With the break in the weather, it is such a joy to ride down Bombay Road and hear the squeals and laughter of the kids enjoying the new playground at Bombay Park.

New slides, swings and a grill at the picnic shelter will most assuredly be used this summer. Many thanks to Davidson County and Denton Parks & Recreation for seeing this project from beginning to end.

Miss Denton has a full schedule 

Harleigh Russell, a second-grader at Denton Elementary, has been crowned as Little Miss Denton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Dorsett. Sadie Shaw, a junior at South Davidson High School, is the new Miss Denton. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Parrish. The queens are sponsored by the Denton Lions Club and have a full slate of events throughout the 2017-18 year.

Town Hall meetings set

Mayor Larry Ward and the town commissioners will meet at 6 p.m.  Monday at Town Hall.

The Denton Parks and Recreation Board will meet at 6 p.m. April 13 at Town Hall, located at 201 W. Salisbury St.

Area Schools will be closed for spring break

Davidson County schools will be closed from April 10-14, and resume regular schedules on April 17. In addition, prior to the break report cards will be issued on April 7.
