Sprucing up

Lance Cpl. Thomas Cammell, left, and Sgt. Joshua Schaalma, both of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training at Cherry Point, join 26 other volunteer servicemen and women in cleaning flower beds of weeds and mulching Tuesday at Havelock Elementary School.
"When I started seeing them come through the doors in numbers, it was like chill bumps," said Principal Renate Lee. ‘They're supporting us in Iraq and Afghanistan and right here in Havelock. To have them here helping us is miraculous."
Havelock Elementary is a year-round school like Tucker Creek Middle School and Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School, all of which open their doors to students to begin the 2008-09 school year on July 15.
