Havelock goes green
Volunteers plant trees at rec complex for Arbor Day
The Gatorade went down fast. The trees took a little longer to go up.
About 25 volunteers pitched in to help Havelock look greener by planting trees Saturday at the Havelock Recreation Complex as part of an Arbor Day event.
"It's a beautiful day," said Daniel Hammonds, one of many Marines who volunteered. "I figure I may as well get out and do something."
Ashley Greenstreet and Jessica Frausto volunteered from Wal-Mart.
"Wal-Mart likes to give back to the community, so we're here," Greenstreet said.
Volunteers helped plant 58 trees Saturday throughout the complex. Though temperatures were in the 70s, the beating sun combined with the effort of hauling dirt and lifting and placing trees in pre-dug holes created quite a workout for the volunteers.
Members of the Havelock Appearance Commission provided snacks, but many volunteers took advantage of the water and Gatorade the organization provided for the event.
Havelock won a $3,583 grant from the N.C. Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program through the N.C. Division of Forestry Resources in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service to purchase the trees.
