Havelock Mayor Robert Webb proposes changes that would increase commissioner term limits from two to four years and alternate which seats are voted on to ensure some continuity on the board.
U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones admits to nervousness about the future of Cherry Point’s Naval Air Rework Facility, saying a reasonable and responsible case has been made for keeping the facility open, but that there are no guarantees about the future of the facility and its 2,047 employees.
1971
Larry Lundy, a Havelock High senior, signs a football scholarship with East Carolina University, becoming the second member of the state championship team to sign with the Pirates.
1979
Havelock officially annexes Cherry Point, adding about 8,000 acres and 14,000 people, despite county and military opposition to the move.
1993
A Cherry Point Marine, Cpl. Ryon Johnson, is shot by a robber in a ski mask at the Carolina Pines Fuel Market. Johnson was waiting for his wife to get off work at the time.
1996
President Bill Clinton lands at Cherry Point on his way to Camp Lejeune.
The Naval Air Depot at Cherry Point completes its first drone in the Navy aerial target program, a QF-4S.
2008
Capt. Alberto Benscome dies when his AV-8B Harrier crashes into a field off N.C. 101 about one mile from Cherry Point.
