Rams boys trounce Conley, girls tie
Comments 0 | Recommend 0For Havelock’s girls track team, it was a good preview of the competition at today’s season-ending Big East 4-A meet.
For the Rams boys, it might have been a little too easy.
Havelock’s girls raced to a 71-71 tie with Greenville Conley Thursday at Rams Stadium in the final regular-season meet of the season.
The Rams boys cruised to a 112-25 win over the Vikings as they prepared for the all-important league meet, which takes place at 2 p.m. in Rocky Mount.
“It’s good for the kids’ confidence,” said Havelock boys coach Rod Harvey. “D.H. Conley, they just weren’t near as good as they have been the last few years. They didn’t give us a lot of competition. But the kids are confident, and I guess that’s good.”
Both Harvey and girls coach Tomeka Wiggins, who coaches sprinters and relay runners of both genders while Harvey does the same in distance events, agree that while the girls team should be competitive today, the Rams boys have a legitimate shot at the conference title.
“For the girls, the conference tournament is going to be up for grabs,” Wiggins said. “For our boys, because we’ve seen the whole conference, our boys should be able to take the conference.”
Finishing first for Havelock’s boys Thursday were: Adam Netko, shot put; Caleb King, discus; Linnell Totten, high jump; Gary Henderson, long jump; Sam Schandorff, Marcus Barefield, Andrew Bell and Tom Mock, 4x800 meter relay; Jeremiah Godette, 110m high hurdles; Shaquel Frazier, 100m dash; Emmanuel Bland, Shaquel Frazier, Jeremiah Godette and Will Bland, 4x200m relay; Nathan Barefield, 1600m; Shaquel Frazier, Byron Cary, Jeremiah Godette and Will Bland, 4x100m relay; Jeremiah Godette, 300m low hurdles; Jamar Frazier, 800m; Will Bland, 200m; Ryan Gentry, 3200m; Will Woods, Garrett Wildermuth, Shaquel Frazier and Jamar Frazier, 4x400m relay; and Mark Keim, pole vault.
Godette broke his own week-old school record in the 110m high hurdles with a time of 14.81 seconds.
Finishing first for Havelock’s girls were: Doris Richards, shot put; Doris Richards, discus; Ashley Schirmer, high jump; Nayanda Whitehurst, Ashley Gray, Kate Finley and Crystal Ortega, 4x800m relay; Madreka Turner, 100m high hurdles; Madreka Turner, 300m low hurdles; Javon Boone, 200m; and Javon Boone, Michelle Tapp, Tomeka Prichard and Christina Daniels, 4x400m relay.
After the conference meet, Rams athletes who qualify will head to the regional meet in Apex on May 11.
