Group takes right approach to pool
We judge by the response and feedback we have received that the idea of a city swimming pool is controversial to say the least.
Some believe that a pool is a needed project that would provide activity for our seniors and a place to go for our children.
Others don't believe a pool is needed, especially with Cherry Point's pools and the beach nearby, and think it would be an unnecessary expense for the city.
On the surface, having the city - that is to say the taxpayers - take on the responsibility of funding this project makes little sense, especially when so many other projects are needed.
Just look west toward New Bern, where cost estimates for its city pool have risen from $2 million to $4.2 million in the last five months.
Yet, we can't help but salute the ideas of the people behind the PARKS Foundation, People Assisting Recreation for Kids to Seniors.
This private group has not talked about appealing to the city for the money to build the pool. Instead, they are focused on raising $10 million, not only for a pool but also for other city recreation needs.
Such an effort that involves raising money from private individuals and businesses is something we can get behind. This way, those who truly support a pool and other recreation needs in Havelock can make their support known through a donation.
And, the estimated $2 million to $3 million for Havelock's pool does not become a burden on the taxpayers.

| I agree that it is alot of money to dedicate for a community pool, but the typical mindset of "there are resources outside of havelock that can be used". We can not keep relying on everyone else forever. |
