Joseph Austin Nelson
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Joseph Austin Nelson, 88, of Havelock, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern.
He was a Marine Corps pilot, serving from 1942 to 1973, with distinguished service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. From 1969 through 1972, he was commanding officer of Marine Air Group 26 at New River.
Memorial will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Faith Evangelical Bible Church, Newport.
Private burial will be held in Kenbridge, Va.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Virginia Nelson; two sons, Dan Nelson and wife Judith of Dallas and David Nelson and wife Sheila of Birmingham, Ala.; one daughter, Susan Sauer and husband Ronald Sauer of Wheaton, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service on Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Evangelical Bible Church, 8170 Hwy. 70, Newport, NC 28570.
