He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and the onset of Vietnam before his retirement after serving his country for 26 years with honor and proud to be an American.
He was many things to many people, a generous man always trying to help a worthy brother, but above all, he was his wife's "knight in shinning armor."
He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying the 1980 Marine Moose hunt in Canada with his older brother, Charlie, as well as moose and bear hunting in Canada with his younger brother, Edgar.
Upon his retirement, he was a land developer, raised cattle and was an outstanding Ford salesman in North Carolina. Moving back to Maine, he continued his venturous life of hunting, trapping and fishing with family and friends.
He was the son of the late Harry Albert and Fannie (Willigar) Dowling, born, May 17, 1925, in Chases Mill.
He was a notable member of Cherry Point Lodge No. 688, Scottish Rite of New Bern, NRA, TWFA and the MCA as well as many other organizations that held special significance to him.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 29 years; stepchildren Paula and son-in-law Gregory Allen Sr. of California, Christina and son-in-law David Downing of North Carolina, and Henry "Jay" Eley of Maine; grandchildren Adena, Greg Jr., Nathan, Felicia, Rachel, Breanna and Jeremiah; brothers Edgar and sister-in-law Gale of Georgia, and Henry of Whitneyville, Herbert and sister-in-law Pam of Whitneyville, and Harry and sister-in-law Peggy of Cathance Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

He requested no services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to Richard Hatch's grandson, Joshua Bednarek, who has Angelman syndrome, at 4 Westford Street, Haverhill, MA 01832.
