1960
Commissioners approve a bid from John Stevens for city garbage collection, with trash pickup scheduled three times a week.
1970
City commissioners approve the formation of the Havelock Recreation Commission, with initial funds of $22,925 coming from the Havelock Youth Center. Bruce Kent, E.P. Mertz, Samuel Fones, Tom Benton and Earl Daniels are appointed to serve on the commission.
1971
Havelock reverses its ban on providing fire coverage in the Township Six area and responds to a mobile home fire west of the city.
Monsignor Frank Howard, who came to Havelock in 1953 and helped establish Annunciation Catholic Church and School, dies at the age of 75 on Christmas day in Pinehurst, 14 months after his retirement.
1974
The Don Lee Heights Homeowners Association forms in an effort to get street and drainage problems solved.
1975
Vandals cut down two rare 10-year-old blue spruce evergreen trees decorated for Christmas in the yard of Havelock resident John Dolacky.
1977
The Federal Communications Commission approves CATV’s application for a cable television permit for Havelock.
1980
Effie Carter, of the Harlowe community, celebrates her 100th birthday on Christmas Day.
1982
Thieves break into the El Mejicano restaurant and take steaks and spare ribs from the freezer, cook them and then eat them. They then do the dishes before leaving.
1983
Renee Pearce, a Havelock High School senior, is selected an All-American cheerleader and cheers in the Aloha Bowl in Honolulu.
1989
A winter storm wallops Havelock with 17 inches of snow over two days. The cold snap causes frozen roads and burst water pipes, and traps many in their homes because roads are impassable. Still the storm provides Havelock with what many believe is its only white Christmas.
1992
The N.C. Environmental Protection Agency identifies nine sites in Havelock that have aging tanks leaking oil or gas into the groundwater.
1996
A 60-year-old Florida woman is arrested after stealing more than $2,000 worth of Beanie Babies from Bob Clark’s Pharmacy.
2002
Havelock City Manager Tom Phillips is named Manager of the Year by the Eastern Carolina Council of Governments.
2003
The Naval Aviation Depot at Cherry Point celebrates its 60th anniversary.
An Environmental Impact Statement that would take at least two years to complete delays the planned construction of the 10-mile U.S. 70 bypass around Havelock until possibly 2008.
Havelock seniors celebrate plans to turn the old Havelock Post Office on Trader Avenue into a new Havelock Senior Center.
2007
Walmart begins the hiring process for 220 employees to work at the new store in Havelock, which is scheduled to open in 2008.
2008
Eleven major intersections along U.S. 70 and Main Street in Havelock receive large-lettered overhead signs denoting side streets.
