Opposition sparks the withdrawal of a proposed cable television plan in Havelock.
1970
The government begins accepting bids for a new post office to be constructed on Trader Avenue in Havelock. The building is now used as the Havelock Senior Center.
Havelock city employees George D. Cottingham Jr., Luther L. Mills, James A. Weldon, Ervin E. Pratt. M.L. Shuffler, Jackson H. Smithwick, Joseph W. Hill, John E. Eaton, John D. Piner and Ned Chadwick Jr. receive Navy Merit Awards for Group Achievement after working for 31 straight hours in helping restore electrical service at Cherry Point after a string of severe thunderstorms in August.
1977
Eugene Smith is re-elected mayor, while Eva Sermons and Don Haley are elected commissioners.
1982
The Naval Air Rework Facility at Cherry Point wins the Navy’s Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Chief of Naval Material Command Productivity Excellence Award.
1983
Unofficial vote returns show that Eugene Smith wins re-election as mayor by one vote over Tom Mylett.
1984
Susan Rexrode, head of the city’s wastewater treatment facility, receives the national W.D. Hatfield Award for helping Havelock maintain one of the best effluent sewer plants in the state.
1990
A commitment by Jasper Industries to build a sewing factory clears the way for construction of an industrial park on the east side of the city off N.C. 101.
1991
Capt. Thomas P. Driscoll, of VMA-223, based at Cherry Point, is killed when his AV-8B Harrier crashes in mountainous terrain near Sevilla, Spain.
1994
Lee K. Allen is elected to the Craven County Board of Commissioners to represent the Havelock area. He defeated incumbent Roger Bell.
1995
Jimmy Sanders is re-elected mayor of Havelock. In the same election, Craven County voters pass a $17 million bond referendum that will help pay for a new middle school to be located in the Tucker Creek community of Havelock.
1998
Havelock commissioners approve new regulations redefining “at-large” animals after a resident complained about a recent dog attack.
2003
Military, civic, education and political leaders turn out for the grand opening of the Havelock Campus of Craven Community College. The campus includes the Institute for Aeronautical Technology and the new Havelock-Craven County Public Library.
2005
Cherry Point Baptist Church celebrates its 50th anniversary.
