Betty Collins Friday
Betty Collins Friday, 79, of, Charlotte, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital.
She was a native of Mecklenburg County and was the daughter of the late Fred D. Collins Sr. and Effie Rich Collins.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Gaston Memorial Park, with the Rev. John Stanley officiating.
Visitation will follow the graveside service at the cemetery.
A Charlotte native, Betty Lou graduated from Harry P. Harding High School, Class of 1946. During her years at Harding, she was very active in dramatics and music. She was very proud to have been the only junior high student ever elected as a senior high cheerleader.
After high school, she attended Queens College in Charlotte for two years. She then transferred to Wake Forest University, where she graduated summa cum laude in 1951. While at Wake Forest, she was the sweetheart of Sigma Chi Fraternity and was the only married woman ever to be elected Queen of the May Court.
During her many years living in Florida, she was very active in the Little Theater and was in high demand as a runway model.
In her retirement years in Havelock, she, along with her husband, Grady, were active in many civic organizations.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Mark Reynolds of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepchildren, Robin Friday and his wife, Darla, of Orlando, Fla., and Rhonda Pierson of Sarasota, Fla.; brothers and sister-in-law, Fred and Patricia Collins of Charlotte, James P. Collins of Louisville, Ky., and Gerald Collins of Charlotte; sisters and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Cole Powell of Charlotte, and Judi Wilson of Greer, S.C.; granddaughter Verna Lou Foley and her husband, Jack; and step grandchildren, Robin Friday Jr., Chad Lawrence Friday and Dallas Jacqueline Friday.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Grady Lawrence Friday Jr.; and sister, Canadia Collins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
