W. Avon Drake
Comments 0 | Recommend 0W. Avon Drake, 61, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008, at his home in Trent Woods.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina A&T State University and his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University. His career included more than 25 years as a college professor. Throughout his life, he was honored by universities and other organizations for his extensive record of civic engagement.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 39 years, Doris; one son, Malik of Washington; one daughter, Karenya of Silver Spring, Md.; his mother, Mattie Drake of Havelock; one brother, Bill Drake of Jacksonville; four sisters, Theressa "Joanne" Barron of Providence, R.I., Miranda Drake and Arlene Drake of Cary, and Bonnie Drake of Fuquay-Varina; two aunts, Mary Martin (Reese) of Philadelphia and Edna Hall of New Bern; one uncle, James Woods (Lucille) of Havelock; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Green Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Hickman Hill Loop Road, Havelock. Pastor J.R. Smith will officiate.
Burial will follow at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Oscar's Mortuary, New Bern.
