1961
Commissioners adopt a resolution seeking nine acres of government surplus property in the old Splinterville area. The Craven Board of Education sticks by its commitment to get 30 of the 32 acres to construct a new high school.
1964
Merchants protest a state proposal for one-way side streets to U.S. 70 and ask city leaders for time to develop their own plan.
1970
Annunciation Catholic Church honors retiring Monsignor Frank Howard with a special reception and ceremony. Howard, who oversaw construction of a new sanctuary and school, had been at the church for 17 years.
Rep. Chris Barker announces that the proposed Neuse River ferry between Pamlico County and eastern Craven County should be operational by June of 1971.
1971
Commissioners approve the fluoridation of the city’s water supply.
Commissioners approve new regulations that prohibit dogs running at large and allows for complaints of barking dogs to be investigated.
1974
Police raid an East Main Street apartment and seize 150 pounds of marijuana valued at $54,000. Three people are arrested.
Lester Harmon becomes the city’s new recreation director, about one month before the city’s new recreation building is scheduled to open.
1975
Commissioners reject a proposed change in city government that would have given the city manager more power.
A military TC-4C Gulfstream jet used for navigation and bombardier training crashes shortly after takeoff in a wooded area of Cherry Point, killing all nine aboard.
Larry Lundy, a Havelock High graduate and East Carolina football player with a 3.4 grade point average in psychology, is nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship.
1977
The Harlowe Volunteer Fire Department celebrates the opening of its new fire station with an open house. Guest speaker is U.S. Rep. Walter Jones Sr.
1978
The state awards a construction contract for replacement of the median with a center turning lane on East Main Street.
1979
Three Havelock restaurants, El Mejicano, Tony's Italian Kitchen and Club 21, become the first in Havelock to serve liquor by the drink after county voters approved the measure in a Sept. 25 election.
1981
A 14-month investigation - and a month-long search for the body of missing Marine - ends with the discovery of the remains of John A. Hein in the Croatan Forest about five miles from Havelock. Cpl. Matthew A. Baker is charged in the case.
Rose Brothers Furniture announces it plans to rebuild its Havelock store after a fire destroyed the building on May 3.
1982
Investors announce plans for a 38-acre cemetery to be called Forest Oaks Memorial Park on Lake Road.
John N. Gillespie Jr., a 1960 Havelock High graduate, receives the Humanitarian Service Medal for his rescue efforts after an Air Florida passenger jet crashed into the icy Potomac River in Washington.
The N.C. Department of Transportation announces plans for $45,000 in improvements to U.S. 70 west of Havelock that includes the removal of trees, the installation of paved shoulders and resurfacing of the highway.
1983
The Havelock Chamber of Commerce presents Gunnery Sgt. Michael B. Mattern with its first Military Citizen of the Quarter award.
1985
Havelock High School hosts its first high school band competition.
1987
The Hardee’s restaurant on West Main Street in Havelock goes out of business just weeks after the Western Sizzlin’ on East Main Street shut its doors.
1991
The A.A. Cunningham Air Museum committee announces it has received more than $3.2 million in donations and pledges toward the construction of the facility in Havelock.
1998
The Havelock Historical Society forms with Barb Whiteman as its president. The new group’s main mission is to renovate the landmark Trader Store.
2000
The official groundbreaking for the Institute of Aeronautical Technology is held at the Havelock campus of Craven Community College.
2003
Led by an effort spearheaded by Sandy Hagan, the Boys and Girls Club announces that Havelock will receive a club to be run at the Rachide Recreation Center.
2004
Commissioners pass amendments designed to help the city comply with a Joint Land Use Study that emphasizes the need to restrict encroachment around Cherry Point.
