  • Former Havelock High standout Pharoh Cooper, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, has received national recognition for the Paul Hornung Award.
    Cooper, the most valuable player of the 2012 state championship game, was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List. The award is given annually to the most versatile player in college football.
    Cooper, who is expected to start at wide receiver this season, also returns punts and kickoffs for the Gamecocks.
    He showed his versatility during his freshman season at South Carolina when he caught three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, rushed 20 times for 202 yards and a touchdown and completed 2 of 3 passes for 29 yards and another touchdown. He returned nine punts for a total of 40 yards and 16 kickoffs with a 22.4-yard average.
    Cooper is one of 47 players named to the Hornung Watch List.
