  • Donald George Becker, 77, of Newport, N.C., died quietly Sunday March 30, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center with family at his side.
  • GREENVILLE - Donald George Becker, 77, of Newport, N.C., died quietly Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center with family at his side.
    Donald was born in Rochester, N.Y. on April 23, 1936 to Clarence and Agnes Becker of Rochester, N.Y. Donald was pre-deceased by his mother and father, his brother Allen Becker of Palatka, Fla., and his sister Nancy Becker of Rochester, N.Y.
    Donald enlisted in the United Stated Marine Corps and set his feet on the yellow footprints of Parris Island, S.C. on April 1, 1953. He faithfully and dutifully served his country until retiring as a Master Sergeant on February 28, 1974. Donald’s last duty station was MCAS Cherry Point, N.C. where he served as the Air Traffic Control Maintenance Chief. Donald was awarded several Vietnam Campaign Awards as well as Presidential Unit Award, Purple Heart Award, and multiple Good Conduct Awards.
    Continuing his love of service to God and Country, Donald began his post retirement career with the Department of the Navy on April 17, 1974. He continued his exemplary performance for his country and Corps until his retirement as the Civilian Air Traffic Control Maintenance Officer on September 9, 2002.
    Donald was a loving, devoted husband and father and his passions for service extended to his community as well. Donald was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the loyal order of the Moose. Joining the local Moose Lodge No. 2194 in Newport, N.C., on October 31, 1991, he became Governor of Ritual Team in 1995. He obtained Moose Legion membership on October 17, 1999 and was awarded the Fellowship Degree on June 19, 2005. Donald also served as Treasurer for the Carteret Humane Society for 4 years and served on its Board of Directors for 12 years. He was currently serving and the representative for the Society to the Newport Pig Cooking Committee.
    Donald also enjoyed his time on the water, ocean fishing off his boat and placed twice in the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament. He also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson with friends and family as much as was possible. Charity rides were some of his favorite organized rides. Donald also enjoyed his free time on the family farm in Virginia where he spent lots of time enjoying the outdoors and caring for the many animals they have acquired over the years.
    Donald had a way of touching everyone he met and was loved by most all that new him. His charming mannerisms, heart-felt laugh, and “life is good” attitude will be missed by all.
    Donald is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kathleen W. Becker of the home and two sons, Richard Mark Becker of Denver, Colo., and John Russell Becker of New Bern, N.C. Donald is also survived by two sister in laws and one brother in law, Judy Bell of Mt. Jackson, Va., Anita Becker of Palatka, Fla., and Jim Wilson of Vienna, Va. Donald is also survived by four grandsons, John Michael Becker of Newport, N.C., and John Russell Becker, Richard Allen Becker, and Benjamin Kirkland Becker, all of Denver, Colo. He is further survived by four nieces and two nephews, Bettie Bell of Newport News, Va., Katie Bell of Hampton, Va., BMSN Rosie Bell of NAS Norfolk, Va., Kelly Bossley of Denver, Colo., Mike Becker of Palatka, Fla., and Andy Wilson of Atlanta, Ga., as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews.
    Page 2 of 2 - A memorial service will be held at Saint Egbert’s Catholic Church in Morehead City, N.C. on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Flowers may be sent to Saint Egbert’s Catholic Church, 1706 Evans Street, Morehead City, N.C.
