  • A fire destroyed a van owned by Carolina Cab Wednesday afternoon in Havelock.
Driver Don Daugherty said he had just dropped off a customer near 110 Lynnwayne Circle when he noticed smoke coming from the vehicle.
I was coming down the driveway and the cab started filling up (with smoke), he said. I thought it was steam at first. I got out and opened the hood and it took a couple of seconds to see where it was coming from.
It didnt start flaming up until I got all my stuff out of the cab. I just got away from the cab and stood by a tree until another cab showed up.
The Havelock Fire Department was called at 1:42 p.m. but the flames destroyed the van in minutes. The fire was under control by 1:50 p.m., but by then the damage had been done.
    Daugherty was not injured.
Ive been running that cab all day, he said. I made an airport run with it. It went up real quick.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
