  • Instead of wrestling in the second round of the dual state tournament, the Havelock Rams had to watch it on their home mat.
Havelock lost its final five matches and were knocked out early with a 41-27 loss to Rocky Mount on Tuesday in Havelock.
Rocky Mount, which avenged a two-point loss to the Rams earlier, lost to Swansboro in the second round.
Havelock’s Lamonte Frazier won the first match, at 113 pounds, giving the Rams the lead, but the Gryphons rallied for a 16-15 advantage.
Then the match looked to take a turn in Havelock’s favor when Kevin Garay (160) and John Ellis (170) got back-to-back pins.
“That’s where we were thinking we could stay in it,” Andrews said.
Rocky Mount won by injury default at 182; a decision at 195; a major decision at 220; and forfeits at 285 and 106.
The Havelock seniors were highlighted since last week’s Senior Night was canceled because of snow. One of those seniors, Ryan Davis, pinned his opponent in less than two minutes at the 138-pound weight class.
Swansboro beat C.B. Aycock in its first-round match. The Pirates won five matches by forfeit, an injury default, two pins and a tech. fall.
Andrews said his team was looking forward to a second-round match with Swansboro. The Coastal Conference foes were scheduled to wrestle last week for second place but the match was canceled and not rescheduled.
“In a way, us coaches were kind of looking past Rocky Mount a little bit,” Andrews said. “I was looking forward to Swansboro big time. I really wanted to wrestle those guys.
    “That’s a heartbreaker.”
The Rams will next wrestle at the individual eastern regionals in Rocky Mount on Feb. 14 and 15.
“We just notified the team of who is wrestling at that tournament,” Andrews said. “Now it is down to the individuals. They know what they need to do and where they need to be.
“Hopefully we can go there and get a regional title.”
