Roughly two weeks after a double-overtime classic for the championship of West Carteret’s Holiday Tournament – Havelock and the Patriots treated the crowd to another masterpiece Friday at Havelock High.
West Carteret led 34-27 at the half, when the Rams came storming out of the locker room with an 11-3 run to regain a lead they would not relinquish in a 66-59 victory.
The win gives Havelock (8-5, 5-0 Coastal) a two-game lead over West Carteret (7-9, 4-2) in the league standings.
White Oak is sandwiched between the Rams and Patriots in second place in the Coastal Conference at 11-6, 5-1.
“We came into this game with a better strategy for them (West Carteret) than we had in the holiday tournament in which we wanted to matchup with their shooters a lot better,” Havelock coach Bill Fryczynski said. “We had too many silly mistakes early and didn’t play our best, but it’s a credit to the guys to be able to beat a good team like West Carteret while not playing their best.”
Kyran Bowman dazzled with 24 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.
“I think we were frustrated in the first half and we had way too many turnovers,” Bowman said. “To be in the lead in conference now feels good since we haven’t won conference in basketball and football here since 1992.”
Jordan Cuthbertson poured in 14 points and Jordan Begley added 11 for the Rams.
“We had to come out and focus on their shooters, mainly Chase (Carraway) and Nathan (Windley), and try to deny the ball,” Jordan Cuthbertson said. “In the second half, we played better ‘D’ and got out in transition to get the win.”
Carraway paced the Patriots with 21 points and Windley chipped in with 12.
Havelock shot 8-for-13 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and Matt Boykin’s clutch 3-pointer with less than a minute to go helped seal the victory.
The Rams will travel to West Craven Tuesday to take on the Eagles.
