After Emily Bowman calmly made a pair of free throws with 31.8 seconds left to give the Rams some breathing room, the Patriots answered with a Colleen Taylor 3-pointer.

Leading 42-39 with 4.5 seconds to go, Apriel Barrette split a pair of free throws to ice Havelock’s 43-39 Coastal 3A Conference victory Friday at Havelock High.

“We didn’t have a very good defensive rhythm tonight to be able to keep them off balance,” Havelock coach Anna Spear said. “We got a lot better on the boards in the second half, but our situational basketball was not very good.”

Barrette led the Rams with 15 points and Jalisa Wilson added eight points and 11 rebounds.

“Apriel had some huge passes and handled the ball well down the stretch for us,” Spear said. “I also thought Ieisha Cooper (five points) was big off the bench tonight.”

Taylor had 13 points to lead the Patriots and Jayde Grant added 12.

Havelock improves to 8-6 overall and 5-0 in the Coastal Conference.

The Rams will tangle with fellow Coastal unbeaten West Craven Tuesday in Vanceboro.
