  • Students in Ashley Alicea’s third-grade class at W.J. Gurganus Elementary School in Havelock have been named one of five finalists in a national writing contest.
MrsP.com announced the finalists last week in its national Be-a-Famous Writer contest.
The contest, open to students from kindergarten through fourth grade, tasked the students with writing a story on the theme of magic. Classes had the option of collaborating to develop the story or picking an individual student’s story to represent the class.
In the case of Alicea’s class, the students worked together to write a story called “My Magic App.”
The four other finalists are from schools in Iowa, Arkansas, Florida and North Carolina.
The winner of the contest, to be announced on Wednesday, receives various books, audio books and digital books for the classroom as well as a bound copy of the created story. The story will also be read live on the website on World Read Aloud Day on March 5.
A panel of judges, including celebrities such as actress Melissa Peterman and television talk show host Craig Ferguson, will select the winner.
Kathy Kinney, who stars as Mrs. P and helped developed the website, played the character Mimi on “The Drew Carey Show.” Mrs. P Enterprises is designed to help spark a passion for reading as well as imagination and creativity in youth by exposing them to books and stories through celebrity storytellers.
The website, at www.MrsP.com, features those stories as well as interactive games and activities, and some stories can also be viewed on youtube.
