  • The Havelock Fil-Am Association has organized a relief effort to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, a monstrous storm that struck the Philippines on Nov. 8.
Aimie Faulkner, president of the group, said the executive committee met Sunday and decided to donate $2,000 that was raised during the Havelock Chili Festival to typhoon victims.
The storm struck with 196 mph winds and massive storm surge, flattening coastal communities. The death toll is nearly 4,000 and expected to climb.
Faulkner said Havelock has a large Filipino-American population and many have relatives in the region impacted.
“It’s really, really tragic,” said Faulkner. “Many are injured and thousands are missing.”
Faulkner said that the $2,000 was divided so that 10 families with Havelock area connections would get $200 each.
Beyond that, Faulkner said the group would hold a fundraiser to benefit typhoon victims on Dec. 21 at Howard Hall at Annunciation Catholic Church. The event is to kick off with a children’s Christmas party at 5 p.m. A dinner and dance for adults follows at 7 p.m.
Faulkner said that Filipino food will be served including lumpia, roast pork with Filipino sauce, Filipino noodles, white rice, vegetables and Filipino desserts. Admission to the dinner/dance is $20 with all proceeds going toward typhoon victims.
Faulkner said the group is also collecting canned food, which can be dropped off at Marie’s Alterations at 13 Park Lane in Havelock. Monetary donations will also be accepted at Marie’s by owners Lydia and Pablo Gomez. Checks can be made out to Havelock Fil-Am Association.
“We’re going to be continuously raising funds for this because it’s going to take a long time for them to get on their feet,” Faulkner said. “More people are going on our list that this money is going to go to. There are 1.4 million people who are affected.”
