  • A man and woman were in the Carteret County Jail Thursday after detectives found meth labs at the couple’s Newport home and in the woods, according to a release by Carteret County Sheriff’s Office.
Christopher Lee Byrd, 27, and Chelsea Rae Lewis, 23 — both of 134 Croatan Drive — were arrested Tuesday on charges filed by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office.
Byrd is charged with manufacturing meth; possession of meth precursors; and possession of drug paraphernalia. Byrd had outstanding drug warrants in Onslow County in connection with trafficking meth, according to the release.
Lewis was charged with possession of meth precursors.
Carteret detectives learned of “the couple’s illegal activities” and went to their home, which housed an active meth lab, according to the release.
“After detectives interviewed Byrd and Lewis, an additional meth lab was located in a wooded area off of Lake Road,” according to the release.
N.C. State Bureau of Investigation agents also responded and they seized, processed, and recovered chemicals and precursors from both sites locations and took the “dangerous items to a disposal facility,” according to the release.
Byrd’s bond was set at $600,000. Lewis’ secured bond was set at $100,000.
Both have had first appearances in court.
