NEW BERN ó Sam Shell (88) passed away on October 15, 2013, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, N.C. He was born May 6, 1925, in Fayetteville, N.C., to Roland Grady Shell Sr. and Margaret Speight Carter Shell.
Sam grew up in Fayetteville, attending local schools. He was a WWII Navy veteran and served on the USS James E. Craig Destroyer Escort 201 in the Pacific. After his service, Sam joined his parents in Havelock, N.C., where he met his lifelong love JoAnne Ferguson; they were married in 1950. He graduated from the first Naval Apprentice School Class at Cherry Point, N.C. in 1947 and later completed his Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management in 1979.
Sam worked at the aviation maintenance facility at Cherry Point from 1942 until his retirement in 1986. He served in many roles while there, ranging from helper to Production Department Head.
Sam was a Mason for over 60 years and was active in the Scottish Rite. He was an active member of Garber United Methodist Church. Sam had many enthusiasms including photography, RVíing, computers and a love of dogs. Sam and JoAnne traveled to all 50 states and many countries.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Howard T. Shell and George E. Carter, Sr. , and his wife of 62 years JoAnne Ferguson Shell. He is survived by his daughters Suzanne Shell of New Bern, Judy Buchanan and husband, Buck, of Huntsville, Ala., and Margaret (Peggy) Faulkenberry and husband, Billy, of New Bern. He is survived by his grandchildren, Megan Buchanan, Erin Buchanan, Caitlin Faulkenberry, and Ryan Faulkenberry, as well as his sisters-in-law Frances Shell, Sue Ferguson and Vina Ferguson Stroud.
Samís family is very thankful for the care and respect given him at CarolinaEast Medical Center and at the Crystal Coast Hospice House. In honor of his wife, he established the JoAnne Shell Memorial Endowment Fund at The Promise Place, to support its mission to assist victims of sexual assault. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the endowment at 1401 Park Ave, New Bern, NC 28560.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Garber United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the atrium of the Ministry Center at Garber.
