Havelock senior running back Derrell Scott was restricted to the sidelines for most of 28-16 victory over Richlands on Sept. 27.
Against Jacksonville on Friday night, he was right back cutting and slashing between the lines, in a 42-0 shutout victory over the Cardinals.
Scott rushed 21 times for 174 yards and four touchdowns to lead Havelock to a 7-0 record and its third victory over the Cardinals over the past year. Havelock has outscored Jacksonville in those last three meeting by a combined score of 130-12.
“All of the credit has to go to my offensive line,” Scott said. “They opened up the holes and I couldn’t do it without those boys.”
Scott had suffered a bruised back against Northside on Sept. 20 and ran just three times against Richlands.
“It felt great getting back out there after sitting last week,” he said. “I love football so much, and to be back 100 percent, it felt great.”
Havelock won its 21st consecutive game, a school record.
“Last week, I felt like we got pushed around and some people were doubting how good we were,” Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said. “This past Saturday, we hit the sleds at 7:45 a.m., and I told the kids I wanted to win every game from here on out by at least 28 points. Scoring 42 tonight against a very good Jacksonville team was a statement for us.”
Havelock led 14-0 at the half Scott touchdown runs of 26 and 4 yards, one of which was set up by a Keion Joyner interception.
In the third quarter, the Rams outscored the Cardinals 28-0, and the offense didn’t take the field until the 7:35 mark.
Joyner returned a fumble 67 yards for a touchdown on Jacksonville’s opening series of the second half.
“After I scooped up the ball, I kept looking back to see how close they were to catching me,” said Joyner, who also had a sack in the contest. “I think we came together tonight and everyone did their job.”
After that, Akenno Godette partially blocked a punt, and the ball hit Ram teammates Julian Cuthbertson in the back. Cuthbertson alertly picked up the ball and ran it back 49 yards for a touchdown.
Andrew Ramirez and Matthew Boykin had interceptions for a Havelock defense that posted its third shutout of the season.
Jacksonville quarterback Vincent Siders, who suffered a torn ACL prior to the start of the season, was pulled out of the game in the third quarter.
Page 2 of 2 - “I thought Vincent still had it even with the injury and he wanted to go in this game to maybe get noticed and all, but coming out after halftime and giving up two big plays, it really killed us from there,” Jacksonville coach Beau Williams said.
“We have to play better and cut down mental mistakes and we have West Carteret coming up next week and that game is going to be bigger than this one was.”
Havelock will host Swansboro next week at Rams Stadium at 7 p.m.
