  • A Newport man was arrested this week and charged in connection with a string of vehicle break-ins in a Morehead City subdivision.
Gavin Lee Everett, 21, of Wesley Lane in Newport, was charged Tuesday by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office with three counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, four counts of larceny, three counts of possession of stolen goods, and two counts of attempted breaking and entering of a vehicle, according to a release.
Investigators say a resident in the Brandywine subdivision in Morehead City was alerted at 3 a.m. Tuesday by his dog barking at a window. He discovered his vehicles had been entered and found Everett underneath a vehicle, according to the release.
Responding Deputy Reid Long took Everett into custody and recovered stolen property that linked him to several other car break-ins in the area, according to the release.
The sheriff's office says more arrests are expected in the break-ins, all of which were committed on cars that were unlocked, according to the release. The sheriff’s office recommends that residents lock their vehicles, even if they are in a driveway, since thieves will typically skip cars that are locked.
Everett was taken to the Carteret County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
