  • NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website, ranks Havelock as the 10th best city in North Carolina for young families.
    According to a release, the rankings factored in the quality of public schools, average home value, cost of home ownership, average income and economic growth.
    The nine cities ahead of Havelock in the rankings were all near bigger metropolitian cities such as Charlotte or Raleigh. Havelock was the only city east of Interstate 95 in the top 10.
    According to the survey, Havelock has seen strong growth since 1999, while the cost of home ownership remained a comparatively low $1,269 per month.
    Havelock public schools rated a seven on a scale of one to 10.
    The survey noted Havelock as the home to Cherry Point with plenty of recreational and outdoor opportunities in the city and in nearby locations. It listed the Cherry Point Air Show and Havelock Chili Festival as well as Craven Community Collegeís Institute of Aeronautical Technology.
    Morrisville, located between Raleigh and Durham, rated No. 1 according to NerdWallet. The top 10 list can be found online at www.nerdwallet.com/blog/2013/best-north-carolina-towns-young-families/.
