  • Melvin David Wetzel, Havelock’s oldest veteran, died Saturday at the age of 94. It was during a recent Veteran’s Day Parade, that “Mel” was named Havelock’s oldest veteran.

    He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree Msgr. Frank J. Howard Council #6648 and 4th Degree of Battista Council Assembly #2894. He was also a member of the Havelock Senior Citizens, American Legion of New Bern, a member of NARFE and a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels organization. 
     
    Melvin served in the Army Air Corps as well as working for 33 more years with the federal government at NARF. 
     
     Mel never met a stranger. He could be found calling bingo at the Annunciation Church and Senior Citizens, driving a school bus for the local school students, or selling pumpkins and Christmas trees from his front yard. He also loved spending time enjoying a good game of  baseball.
     
    Melvin enjoyed many great moments during his 94 years of life but one that is best remembered by his family is the day he was honored to participate in the Honor Flight for WWII Veterans.
     
    The Funeral Mass of Resurrection, with Pastor Very Reverend Gregory Spencer officiating, will be 11:00 Friday morning at Annunciation Catholic Church (Parish Hall), 246 East Main Street, followed by interment at Gethsemane Memorial Park, Morehead City.
     
    A visitation will be from 6:00 till 8:00 Thursday evening at the church (Parish Hall).
     
    A reception will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church (Parish Hall) following the interment.
     
    He was preceded in death his wife Lucy Victoria Wetzel and his two daughters, Emily Cecilia Wetzel and Theresa Larson.
     
    Melvin is survived by two sons, Melvin Wetzel Jr. of Greenville; Charles Wetzel of Havelock; three daughters, Cathy Erickson of Havelock; Marilyn Davis of Beaufort; Mary Johnson of Morehead City; one sister, Helen McConnell of Ebensburg PA; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

    The family entrusted their services to Woodbridge Funeral Home of Havelock.
