  • Havelock High Schoolís Natalie Johnson was named to the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team.
For Johnson, a junior, itís the second year in a row she earned a spot on the squad. She led the Rams with 20 goals on the season, filling a void when forward Ali Wickman injured her knee halfway through the season.
Johnson and freshman teammate Dominique Martinez combined for 36 goals.
"They needed someone bigger up top to help with Dom because she is tiny and I am a lot bigger than her," Johnson said. "I was the power and she was the speed and the finesse."
Havelock completed the season with a 15-7 record. The Rams beat Cleveland 6-2 in the first round of the state playoffs but lost 3-2 in the second round to Coastal 3A Conference foe White Oak.
But whenever the Rams needed a goal, Johnson was often the one to spark the offense.
"It was difficult at first because I am more use to distributing the ball," Johnson said of her new position. "I finally got the mentality that I needed to help the team out by scoring."
Johnson has one more season in a Havelock uniform, and being selected to the all-state team for a third straight season is not out of the question.
"That would be awesome to get it three times, but Iím going to focus on getting us past the second round of states," Johnson said.
