  • Havelock has scheduled a special Arbor Day event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the city’s new Historic Slocum Creek Recreation Area at 120 Church Road.
Arbor Day, which was established as a national day of service to encourage the care and planting of trees, will be celebrated this year in Havelock with a pruning party of sorts.
The city recently purchased waterfront property along Slocum Creek and has big plans to develop it into a place for recreation. Volunteers are being sought to help clear part of the property. Participants should bring clippers, loppers, gloves, rakes, pruners and chainsaws and wear long sleeve pants and shirts and boots to help prune trees and shrubs. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided.
Development of the Historic Slocum Creek Recreation Area is in its early stages but city planners are currently designing a master plan for the area, which will include a walking bridge across the creek, a kayak and canoe launch, a network of walkways that link to the Havelock Tourist and Event Center, picnic tables and shelters. Long-range plans call for relocation of the historic Trader Store and adjacent historic railroad depot to the site.
