  • Three people were taken to the hospital Tuesday morning when a pickup truck struck a parked school bus in front of Havelock High School.
The crash happened at 7:48 a.m. when the driver of a Toyota Tundra pickup hit a bus that was picking up students at the high school for transport to Early College East in Havelock, according to Lt. Brian Woods of the Havelock Police Department.
He said the driver of the pickup truck, Charles Glenn Ross, 52, of Havelock, was alone and had been in the line of cars dropping off students at Havelock High for the beginning of classes and had some type of medical emergency, causing him to lose control of the truck. The pickup accelerated through orange cones that separate the parent drop-off area and bus parking lot, striking the right, front corner of the bus.
“There was severe damage to the truck and some damage to the bus,” Woods said. “It actually moved the bus over approximately seven feet from the point of impact.”
Woods said 10 students were on the bus at the time of the crash. He said emergency medical personnel checked the students at the scene.
Ross, student Derick Wilson, 16, of the Stately Pines community, and bus driver Anita Bradley, 35, of Havelock, were transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern. They were all treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
“The juvenile (Wilson) was actually walking up the steps to get into the bus when the impact occurred, which made the juvenile do a back flip out of the bus back onto the parking lot,” Woods said.
The crash occurred as students returned to class for the first time after the week-long Easter break.
No charges have been filed pending the investigation by Havelock Police Officer Kevin Schutzman.
