On March 2, Havelock High School hosted the Glenn Poole Celebration. The celebration was organized to help the Poole family with expenses incurred during Glennís hospitalization and recovery.
The event was a success, and the school, combined with community churches and citizens from Havelock and surrounding areas, was able to provide the Poole family with a donation of $8,350.
The Celebration would not have been possible without the help of several partners and volunteers. I would like to thank the following: Havelock Mayor Jimmy Sanders for assisting in the planning stages and for being a liaison with MCAS Cherry Point. Mayor Sanders was also instrumental in enlisting the assistance from area churches, and he assisted with the organization and implementation of food service at the Celebration.
Members from Cherry Point United Methodist Church and the Havelock High School athletic and band boosters also provided concessions for the event. I appreciate their contributions of time and materials.
I would also like to thank our military partners in the Adopt-a-School program. MALS-14 provided assistance in setting up and taking down all of the equipment and with a general campus cleanup.
Church leaders from the Havelock Ministerial Association helped with advertising by placing information in their church bulletins, and many community members also assisted with advertising by placing signs throughout Havelock, sending mailings, and creating social media venues.
Havelock High School faculty members who helped make the event possible included the entire administrative team, Lisa Taylor, Debbie Sabin, Michele Buday, John McLeod, 5K organizers Dave Garvey and Pam Griffiths, and cornhole tournament organizers Jeff Snead and Tony Bello.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who attended the event and paid to run, walk, play cornhole, or to just have lunch. The Poole family had the opportunity to speak with many of the attendees, and despite a chilly day, participants came out to support them.
Anyone interested in making a donation to the Poole family should send it to Havelock High School, 101 Webb Blvd. Havelock NC 28532. Checks should be made out to Havelock High School and "Glenn Poole Celebration" should be included on the memo line.
