  • The New Bern girls soccer team snapped Havelock’s three-game winning streak with a 2-0 victory Thursday at New Bern High.
The victory comes a week after New Bern went to Havelock and pulled out a 2-1 win for its first of the year.
Mikayla Allen and River Bondurant scored the goals for the Bears on a blustery, frigid evening.
“It was good to get that goal early,” New Bern coach Tim Guter said. “We were playing against the wind in that first half, but I thought we managed the weather and Havelock’s key players very well. We’ve been preaching a lot of discipline lately and I think it was a good result tonight with a lot of young girls on our team and not a deep roster.”
Havelock’s goal-scoring gang of Natalie Johnson, Ali Wickman and Dominique Martinez couldn’t break through New Bern’s defense.
“New Bern has a lot of balance on offense with their attack, and I thought our girls reverted to the offense they played the first time against New Bern, which wasn’t very good,” Havelock coach Jeff Harris said. “We were a little out of sync tonight and we had some decent shots. We just didn’t put any pressure on them with our offense.”
New Bern improved to 2-2 on the season, while Havelock falls to 3-2.
“We had scored 15 goals over the past three games, but tonight we couldn’t get anything going,” Harris said. “We just have to have the girls get some consistency with their level of play and play their best in these big games.”
Havelock is scheduled to play at Swansboro today and at Croatan on Saturday before opening Coastal 3A Conference play against D.H. Conley Tuesday at Havelock High.
