  • Havelock High’s group of regional swimmers may have been small, but they certainly made a big splash.
All of them finished in the top 12 Saturday to qualify for the state 3A swimming and diving championships scheduled for Friday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
Senior Jacob Engel was Havelock’s top individual finisher. He earned the silver medal by placing second in the 100-yard backstroke in 55.66 seconds. For Engel, the time was his fastest of the season, beating his seed time for the regional meet by more than two seconds.
Engel also qualified for the state meet in the 200 individual medley by placing ninth in 2:12.76, beating his seed time by nearly seven seconds.
Engel was also a part of the 200 medley relay team that finished fourth to qualify for the state championship. Engel, seniors Wesley Carlo and Sam Smith, and freshman Seth Schneider finished in 1:48.26, taking six seconds of their seed time.
The 200 freestyle relay team of junior Kendall Smith, senior Joseph Whitley, Schneider and Smith placed 10th in 1:40.77, dropping three seconds off its best time of the season.
For the girls team, senior Abby Clark qualified for the state championships in two individual events and in two relays.
Clark placed ninth in the 50 freestyle in 26.74 and was also ninth in the 100 freestyle in 58.82.
She teamed with senior Caitlin Annunziata, junior Sarah Glasbrenner and freshman Emily Bess to take 10th in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:28.30. That time was 15 seconds faster than the team’s seed time for the regionals.
