  • The AARP tax-aide program is scheduled to begin helping residents with their 2012 income taxes on Tuesday at the Coastal Beacon Church of the Nazarene in Havelock.
  • The AARP tax-aide program is scheduled to begin helping residents with their 2012 income taxes on Tuesday at the Coastal Beacon Church of the Nazarene in Havelock.
    Times will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Tuesday through the end of the tax-filing season on April 9. The service is free, and electronic filing is available.
    Although the program is funded with special attention and emphasis to taxpayers ages 60 and older, the program also offers help to younger taxpayers with low to moderate income who feel they canít afford the services of a professional tax preparer.
    The program is sponsored by the AARP in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
    Volunteers are trained to complete federal and state tax returns and to answer tax questions through the IRS. They must complete the course and pass an IRS exam. Residents should bring a copy of the previous yearís tax returns as well as all documents and receipts that relate to income and deductible expenses for 2012. In additional, Social Security numbers for all taxpayers and their dependents must be provided.
    Coastal Beacon Church of the Nazarene is located at 301 Greenfield Heights Blvd., across the railroad tracks behind Food Lion in Havelock.
