The Havelock Ram wrestling team used strength and speed to jump out to a commanding lead and went on to beat West Craven 42-28 Wednesday in a Coastal 3A Conference match at Havelock High.
The match started at the 138-pound weight class, where West Craven’s Robert Baker earned a hard-fought 9-4 win over Havelock’s Ramone Lawson.
The Eagles didn’t get another win until Gabe Pierre scored a major decision over Chandler Day at 106.
Havelock’s Hunter Littrell (145), Timothy Martin (heavyweight), and Ryan Davis (132) all had victories by pin.
Eagle pins came from Darrin Mewborn (113) and Zaire Layne (120).
“We knew it would probably come down to the last few matches and it did,” West Craven coach Thomas Durham said. “Our guys are just going to have to stop being afraid of the guys in the black singlets. We had some guys not wrestle up to their potential tonight.”
The Rams were leading 36-25 after Layne’s pin at 120 and going into a match at 126 between West Craven’s Dillon Maravelas and Zacharia Drysdale.
Maravelas defeated Drysdale, 6-2, in the next to last match to draw West Craven withing 36-28 with Davis and Cody Cooke left to settle it all.
Davis pinned Cooke in the second period to give the Rams the 42-28 victory.
“It was huge for our freshmen Chandler Day (106) and Zacharia Drysdale (126) to not get pinned in their losses,” Havelock coach Pat Whitford said. “That was a match points difference of five in our favor.
“Two other freshmen in Timothy Martin and Tanner Stamper-Smith stepped up and got big wins. Our young guys were the difference for us tonight.”
Durham echoed the sentiments of his counterpart regarding the 106- and 126-pound matches.
“That was the difference. Credit the Havelock kids for fighting and not getting pinned,” he said. “Our guys had them on their backs for most of those two matches and just couldn’t finish it.”
