  • Two Craven County Republicans have invited the public for a swearing-in ceremony and reception beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center.
Norman Sanderson will take the oath of office to represent the area in the N.C. Senate, while Michael Speciale will take the oath of office to represent the area in the N.C. House.
N.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby is scheduled to preside in the ceremony.
Legislators usually take the oath of office when they go to the General Assembly in mid-January, but newly elected legislators were given an opportunity to be sworn in locally.
Sanderson, who had been in the N.C. House, will be serving his first term in the N.C. Senate, while Speciale won the seat to replace Sanderson in the N.C. House.
"Many people are not able to travel to Raleigh, and Norman and I would like nothing more than to be surrounded by our family and friends, faithful volunteers and constituents as we take the oath of office in the districts we are honored to represent," said Speciale.
Sanderson said: "We are pleased to have Justice Newby administer the oath. It will be a special day, and we look forward to this community event."
Lt. Gov.-elect Dan Forest and a number of area officials have indicated they plan to attend the ceremony, which is open to the public.
Sanderson ran for the seat held by Jean Preston of Carteret County, who decided to retire as an elected official. The Arapahoe resident and Havelock businessman won the seat handily in November 2012 over Democratic opponent Greg Muse.
Speciale of New Bern is a retired Marine and won the redistricted District 3 House seat as his first elected office. He has previously sought a General Assembly seat, is former Craven County Republican Party chairman and is one of the founders of the Coastal Carolina Taxpayers Association.
A reception follows the official ceremony at the tourist center.
