  • 10:50 a.m. update
Authorities are reporting that the gas leak in front of the Sound of Freedom Shoppes in Havelock has been stopped. The leak was reported about 10:15 a.m. at the same location where a car crash resulted in a busted main distribution line last week, prompting the closure of U.S. 70. The highway was not closed for this latest leak.
Today's leak was from a relief valve, and a crew from Piedmont Gas need about 30 minutes to correct the problem. The Sound of Freedom Shoppes was evacuated, but workers are returning. The service road in front of the shopping center is back open.

The gas leak is not believed to be as serious as the situation last week that prompted U.S. 70 to close. The service road in front of the Sound of Freedom Shoppes remains closed, and the center has been evacuated. Authorities report no major issues with the evacuation.
