Havelock High School is scheduled to begin selling state football championship T-shirts beginning on Monday.

The shirts will be sold for $10 each and will be sold in the cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at other times in the main office during regular school hours. Shirts will also be sold during home basketball games.

The money raised from the sale of the shirts goes toward the purchase of championship rings for the Havelock High players and coaches.

The shirts were provided by Norman Kellum, a New Bern attorney, to help not only Havelock but also New Bern High raise money for state championship rings for both schools.

“For these kids to win (state championships), it will mean more to them than they will ever realize — the friendships they made, the lessons they learned about teamwork and discipline,” Kellum said. “They learned lessons there that they won’t learn anywhere else.”

Kellum provided shirts to New Bern High in 2007 when it won the state championship and also last year for Havelock win it won. With both schools winning state titles this season, he provided shirts to both schools.

“I don’t know of any other community that can brag about (two state championships),” Kellum said. “I’m so proud of both these teams. To do it in a fashion in which they did it, New Bern had a fourth quarter that Hollywood couldn’t have written any better. Havelock has been running over everybody all year. Both these teams deserve a championship.”

New Bern beat Porter Ridge 39-38 on Nov. 30 to win the 4A state championship when Jachin Watkins scored the game-winning touchdown with just 26 seconds left in the game.

Havelock trailed Concord 21-20 at halftime but scored 35 straight points in the second half to win its second straight 3A championship, 55-21.

Players and coaches from both teams accepted the T-shirts on Thursday at Kellum’s office in downtown New Bern.

“That’s one of the big things about winning a state championship, they get a state championship ring to show off their hard work,” Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said.

“Our guys are lucky enough to get two in a row. We will be back next year for our third one.”

Besides the shirts, both schools are also collecting monetary donations to purchase championship rings. Contact the respective school for more information.
