The seventh annual Wounded Warrior Christmas Leave Fundraiser is scheduled for Dec. 6.
Craven County residents have supported the area’s Marines and sailors who return injured from war deployments and are being asked again to stand up and be counted.
The seventh annual Wounded Warrior Christmas Leave Fundraiser is scheduled for Dec. 6 at New Bern Golf and Country Club in Trent Woods.
Sponsors led by Craven County Commissioner Steve Tyson, Coastal Carolina Regional Airport Director Tom Braaten (a retired Marine major general), and board member Harry Blot (a retired Marine lieutenant general) urge anyone who can help to respond to the call and buy a ticket to help Wounded Warriors be with their families for Christmas.
The event stems from a pledge several years ago by local members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart to give Wounded Warriors what they wanted for Christmas — a chance to be with family for the holidays.
This fundraiser offers an opportunity to meet Wounded Warriors from the barracks at their recuperation facility at Camp Lejeune and listen to their stories.
Those who have supported this effort in the past say they have been inspired and get more than they give from the brave men and women who have been wounded while fighting for their country.
The event begins at 6 p.m. with a special welcome for the Marines and sailors representing those at the Wounded Warriors Barracks, followed by the presentation of colors.
The $30 per person event ends at 9 p.m. and includes plenty of food, a cash bar and live music.
"Even if you can only stay a short while, please come by and meet these brave Marines and let them know we appreciate the sacrifice they have made," Tyson said. "If you have other obligations but are still willing to help with any amount of donation, please mail a check."
Checks should be made payable to "MOPH-Wounded Warrior Leave" and sent to Jana Tyson, 1915 Trent Blvd., New Bern, NC 28560.
Donations are tax deductible and all proceeds will be spent for the Wounded Warrior Christmas effort to either buy airline tickets and hotel stays for those able to go home, or to bring their families to be with them at Camp Lejeune.
