The Havelock boys basketball team came out firing against East Carteret.
The Havelock boys basketball team came out firing against East Carteret on Tuesday night. The only problem for the Rams was that the Mariners fired back.
East Carteret used two fourth-quarter surges to pull away from the Rams 83-74.
"We can’t allow people to score 83 points against us," Havelock coach Bill Fryczynski said. "Last year, we did a much better job defensively, but this year, we’re just not there yet.
"We were weak along the baseline and allowed them to score right under the basket. I’m not sure what to do about that until we finally get our whole team together."
The Rams (0-2) are missing three key players in Shondel Granison, Pharoh Cooper and Michael Bowman, who are still playing on the Rams football team.
Havelock led 58-57 with just over five minutes left in the game when the Mariners used a quick 6-0 burst to go up 63-58.
Kyron Bowman’s 3-pointer drew the Rams within 71-66 with 2:02 left, but East Carteret then scored the next eight points in the span of a minute to clinch the victory.
Havelock hit 12 3-pointers on the night, including eight in the first half when the Rams went into intermission with a 34-28 lead.
"We’re going to have to shoot 3s," Fryczynski said. "It’s a big part of our offense. We emphasize it at practice — dribble, drive and kick it out and shoot the 3. We’ve got a number of kids who can shoot it. That’s not the problem. The problem is our defense."
Zach Bruns hit five 3-pointers and led Havelock with 23 points, while David Carter hit four bombs and totaled 22.
