  • It was a festive and celebratory night for the West Craven boys’ soccer team — senior night.
But then Havelock crashed the party.
The Rams scored two goals in the second overtime period to secure a playoff spot and beat the Eagles 5-3 Thursday at West Craven High School.
“It was a very good win for us, because we have been struggling a lot lately losing some games we had a chance to win and thought we could win,” Havelock coach Jeff Harris said. “We needed some good momentum going into the playoffs and our two leading scorers Noah (Kemble) and Peter (Brown) both scored tonight and had assists, and we are at our best when they score and share the ball well.”
West Craven had already secured the fourth spot in the Coastal 3A Conference, so the game really was just for pride and bragging rights.
“We wanted to win, no doubt and it would have been good for us going into the playoffs as well, but we made some mistakes and I think we learned from them so that we don’t make them next week,” West Craven coach Aaron Steele said. “I thought our aggressiveness to balls in the air wasn’t what it usually is tonight and they (Havelock) capitalized on corner kicks and throw-ins that hurt us.”
One of West Craven’s seniors, Lamberto Gomez, scored a goal and had an assist, running his career total to 99.
Kemble, scored a pair of goals that helped the Rams’ secure the win and exact some payback from a loss to the Eagles earlier this season.
John Mills, Brown and Nick Seegel scored goals for the Rams as well.
Eliazar Ortega delivered the other two scores for West Craven.
Brown’s and Mills’ goals came in the second overtime period to ice the game for the Rams.
Playoff brackets and opponents are expected to be announced this weekend.
